Maybe those of you who are mostly interested in the package could
subscribed to the pkg-samba-maint ML on Alioth.
Regarding security updates, upstream has a dedicated mailing list to
unveil planned security fixes to vendors before they make them public.
When Jerry Carter did setup this list, I mentioned him Adam Conrad as
"Ubuntu maintainer". What is IMHO important is keeping someone in
Ubuntu devels listed there and guarantee some attention.
We didn't discuss the security issues on the pkg-samba-maint mailing
list, however (this list is public) but only discussed them privately
(Adam was CC'ed as he's listed in the Debian package's "Uploaders"
field).
More generally speaking, the closer we keep that connection, the
better the samba package will be both in Ubuntu and Debian (and, yes,
that sentence sucks probably).
