This seems to me like something that would've been better adopted upstream
first rather than patching into the Debian package.  AFAIK, all the other
patches we carry (and have carried) in the package are patches for bugfixes,
not feature enhancements, and have been directly reviewed by at least one
member of the maintenance team, which I don't think is the case here?

I'm in favor of localized software of course, but I don't think Debian
maintainers should be in the role of mediators between upstreams and
translators on this point.
