Sorry for not following up on that bug earlier...

Can you reproduce this bug with smbclient 3.6.3 or 3.6.4 and 3.6.5 but
these are security releases where smbclient hasn't been modified).

Do you have more information about the *way* BackupPC uses smbclient?
That would help forwardign the bug upstream.
