What I can confirm is that the bug was included in smbclient on testing at the 
beginning of the year until mid-april. It may have been around before that, 
but I don't update that server frequently.

I recompiled smbclient-3.5.6~dfsg-3squeeze6 from stable, which fixed the 
problem.
