One more info that may be important.

To get win7 workstation to join the domain before upgrade, I had to tweak 
registry according to this article:

https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Required_settings_for_NT4-style_domains

Maybe it enabled/disabled something that was removed by the security fix.
