Just reading it like pseudo-code it seems that line wants to traverse 
down through every git submodule to gather information from those...

Assuming you don't want to use git submodules in the packaging, I guess 
that code is unusable and should be patched away.

Related to that:

I notice that you packaged the project with upstream .gitmodule file and 
other .git* hints preserved: That may cause you headaches later when 
using git for packaging where you most likely have different opinion on 
what should be in git submodules (nothing!) and what should be ignored 
(nothing!).

I recommend to repackage with .git* files stripped. I do that by adding 
a debian/gbp.conf file, see e.g. the ruby-sass package.
