I did it with "pristine-tar" program just now.  Hopefully I haven't
messed up.  The original problem was to not use --pristine-tar with
git-import-orig.

BTW, Felix told me in private email that I was allowed to upload new
upstream versions as long as I didn't change binary package names.
Well, I am trying to do that right now, let's see if it works.  But I
am pretty certain that it won't work for sdl-image because I was not
in the Uploaders before.
