smpeg is an extension for SDL 1.2, which is unmaintained upstream.
It seems quite likely that smpeg is dead upstream as well.

There is no direct replacement that I am aware of.

smpeg seems to include SDL 1.2 objects in its API/ABI, so it will
not be possible to convert it to SDL 2 without breaking API/ABI. As a
result, if there is a version or replacement that targets SDL 2, it should
probably be packaged separately, which is why I'm marking this bug as
"won't fix".

libsmpeg0 is depended on by a few, mostly older packages:

- btanks
- libtaoframework-sdl1.2-cil (seems obsolete, see #1037429)
- onscripter
- ruby-sdl
- sdlbrt (from src:sdlbasic)
- smpeg-plaympeg (from the same source package)
- tdfsb
