It's very likely that we won't try fixing the sarge version. The
severity of this bug doesn't deserve this.


We will look at the etch/sid versions soon. Actually, I'm more and
more thinking about *removing* this code that's indeed no longer used
in the installer. Given that all debconf stuff is used only when
"dpkg-reconfigure passwd" which mostly never happens, I don't see much
reason to keep all this.

As a consequence, I propose to change your bug report to "Please
remove all interactive debconf questions from passwd"
