   * What led up to the situation?
debian unstable; apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade
At later time probably a forced power off/on. While booting the machine is printing on console the text above.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
Booting in recovery mode
   * What was the outcome of this action?
I tried another apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade.
Have not yet tried another reboot
