Did you move the old directory back (which should not touch the files
and inodes of the old journal files at all) or did that actually
involved file copying (in which case the files/disk
location/fragmentation could have been subtly changed)?

Just to confirm, did systemd get updated in between the time you could
still reproduce it and now?
