I actually copied them back, although if journalctl is concerned with the 
on-disk layout I'd be mightily surprised! Note that the symptom was an 
ever-growing heap without any IO syscalls.

It hasn't been updated since, although checking dpkg.log I see that 
systemd was upgraded (226-4 -> 227-2) earlier on the day that I first 
noticed the bug.
