Sorry for the delay! I finally made a run of systemd-tmpfiles under gdb and it seems that the following call:

https://github.com/systemd/systemd/blob/master/src/tmpfiles/tmpfiles.c#L898

returns -1 from libfakeroot. I am investigating if a patch is needed for fakeroot to handle this "new" behavior.
