I have figured out a tip that you might put in
/usr/share/doc/mount/README.mount:

When making new mount points, do chmod 0 on them (with nothing mounted
there). That way when they go away, even stat attempts will fail right
away so you'll know faster.

Also it is easy to see what is mounted.
# ls -og /mnt
d---------  2  1024 2006-05-02 18:41 camera
d---------  2  1024 2006-08-05 11:50 fridge
drwxr-xr-x 10 16384 1970-01-01 08:00 coffin
d---------  2  1024 2008-02-11 08:27 floppy

Perhaps also could note this on the mountpoint man page...
