Well, putting any cross-compiler on the path as cc and gcc ought to do
it.

You're missing my point. That's just a recipe to reproduce the bug.
The conditions for this bug (#440683) to occur are unusual and may not
happen in Debian when things are working properly.
But I think it's still a bug.
