I just tested slim, and it seems the Xsession.d approach seems to work 
for this login manager. This means, we have a pretty good coverage.

There also is a ck pam module, which might work with xdm (haven't tested).

You might ask, why not all login managers use the pam module: according 
to upstream, advanced features like multi-user switching do not work 
properly with the pam module. But in the case of xdm that doesn't really 
matter that much imho.
