FYI, I tried another 'apt-get dist-upgrade' after this and here is
what happened...
(I am upgrading from 'etch' to 'unstable')

At this point, things appeared to hang. It must have stayed here for
a couple of minutes...in the meantime, I checked whether 'hald' was
loaded, this is what I saw:
---
# ps auxwww|grep hal
root 9802 0.3 2.9 33128 30532 pts/4 Ss+ 16:24 0:00 /usr/
bin/dpkg --status-fd 11 --configure hal gnome-power-manager gnome-
mount gnome-volume-manager sound-juicer gnome-desktop-environment gnome
root 9803 0.0 0.1 3844 1176 pts/4 S+ 16:24 0:00 /bin/
sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/hal.postinst configure 0.5.8.1-9

sh /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d hal start
root 9847 0.0 0.1 3916 1292 pts/4 S+ 16:24 0:00 /bin/

---
Eventually, something timed out and the 'apt-get' finished with these
messages:
---

Now the 'hald' zombie process is gone:
# ps auxwww|grep hal

hal
I still have a /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket as well:
# ls -l /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket
srwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2008-03-07 09:46 /var/run/dbus/
system_bus_socket
Thanks,
