I certainly agree that this seems better than doing nothing. :)

For me, "restart your session" and "restart your system" seem equally
painful; either way I lose my state. I'd love to see as many programs
as possible supporting self-restart, the way Firefox does (restart on
upgrade, preserve your session); that seems even easier for programs
which have no state, like nm-applet.
I'll look into what it would take to produce a sensible patch.
