I'm not sure, why Sebastian initially dropped the SSL support.

But it might be because of the usual GPL/OpenSSL licence conflict.

As far as I can see, libsockets does not contain a OpenSSL exception in
it's licenses.

Upstream should be adviced to add such an exception or even better,
switch to GNU TLS.
