thanks for all the info, and sorry for the delay in my answer. 

mISDN is not an option cause the box runs a 2.4 kernel, and I'm not
ready to fix that as it works fine :-)

Back to the problem, it might be related to hylafax, as I think
capi4hylafax required a modification in the default permissions for the
capi device. Unfortunately capi4hylafax was running on that machine well
before asterisk, so I can't remember the exact modifications I did.
Could someone send the default permissions and ownership on a standard
capi device ? Mine look like this :

banana:~# ls -l /dev/isdn/capi20 
crw-rw----  1 root uucp 68, 0 Jan  1  1970 /dev/isdn/capi20
