Developing IVR SYstem help request

Im still a student in the last year of B.Enge(Computer Systems And
Networks). Im am highly interested in AI especially if it involves voice
in  it.
 
SO I was serving the internet loking for an open source PBX and found
Asterisk one. Since I have not rea much on it, can you advice me to use
it, and where and how im I going to get further information on it?
 
I am going to develop this IVR system on my industrial attachment
project. So please help me. I am in Lesotho and doing my engineering
degree at Roma.
