I am not involved with backporting, but if you somehow need my 
permission to do so, you certainly have it.

I would sure welcome more collaboration in maintaining the package - 
including simply tracking backporting effort(s) in a separate branch if 
it turns out you have no time/interest in helping out with the main 
packaging effort.

Probably worth mentioning in relation to this, that debacle has proposed 
to move maintenance to a different team (and that lack of proper 
response from me on that proposal might be a reason for lack of recent 
backports from him, but of course he can speak for himself on that).  I 
am not convinced that moving to another team is particularly beneficial 
for this package, and am personally reluctant to get involved in yet 
another team.  Please note that this is no definitive rejection, only a 
plea for more substantial arguments ;-)
