I'm dropping zsh-users from the receipients list now...

Valid point. So a potential transition package would include

* A dependency on zsh
* A symbolic link /bin/zsh-beta -> /bin/zsh
* A postinst script which calls update-alternatives appropriately to
  point to /bin/zsh[45] (whichever is present)

Only if you don't use it as root's login shell, too. ;-)

That should be not so hard to handle by a transitional package.
