I've bisected the bug and it seems https://github.com/zsh-users/zsh/commit/758966502caa6f91abcbaaebf2610609250de1fb is responsible for the breakage. It has two options (and maybe more)
1) revert
2) A minimal patch to change 1 line (thanks to #zsh)
