I cannot believe how *my* system is behaving!
I'll try and find the time to test the same procedure on a Debian
lenny/testing i386 box. Unfortunately, this cannot happen soon... :-(

The only difference I could spot is python2.5, which is version 2.5.2-3
in my case, but 2.5.2-4 in your case... According to
http://release.debian.org/migration/testing.pl?package=python2.5
your installed version has not yet migrated to testing (but could do so
in a week, if it gets built on hppa in time and no other blockers
arise).
