yes, maybe: but why would I want to do that? numpy needs mpl for doc
graphs, so it has to be there.

why do you need it? some arch bootstraping (you didn't say)?

Could you please provide specific details? generic assertions are not
so easy to decode to exactly what you mean, and then fix errors.
