Please don't use this outdated information. Use
https://salsa.debian.org/ci-team/autopkgtest/raw/master/doc/README.package-tests.rst

Most tests don't need to copy anything and can just run in place. Tests
that need to write stuff in-place should copy first.

I have no clue if your suggestion is going to fix anything, the
autopkgtest has run successfully until the latest version.
