Ok. I can't stop from commenting on it, however :-)

* It's not necessary to do "make install" twice in sane-backends.
* Not every config file uses the epson notation ("usb /dev/usbscanner"). 
* You shouldn't set a link from /dev/scanner to a USB scanner. This can
  cause trouble with the SCSI backends.
  
I'm happy to see step-by-step guides like this one.
