what do you mean with "check return values"? 

Regarding the timeout, I think we should switch a common value of 1
minute. I assume that most development is done under Linux, where we
have a 10 minute time out at present; the 1 minute timeout for other
operating systems might cause unexpected errors if a backend for a
really slow scanner is developed under Linux.
