I was having problems like this. I had to disable SCSI Bus resets in the
SCSI
BIOS on both my Bus Logic and Adapter cards when used with my 1200S
scanner. 

Also to eliminate things use:
option scsi-maxqueue 1
until you get things working. I would also comment out all scanners
except:
scsi UMAX * Scanner
until you get things working.
