I'm not sure, that I understand you correctly. When I write

.TH sane-artec_eplus48u 5 "9 Nov 2002" @PACKAGEVERSION@ "SANE Scanner Access 
Now Easy"

like you suggested in 
"[sane-devel] [BUG] wrong headers in sane-backends/doc/*.man",
then the header of the man page simply gets unreadable; the string "SANE 
Scanner Access Now Easy" overlaps the other strings in the header ?
