You may have duplicate files installed now that you've built from 
the tarballs.

I do not know where SuSe installs that stuff by default, only that 
redhat puts the config stuff in /etc/sane.d and that the tarball 
default build puts them in /usr/local/etc/sane.d.

So you might look around and expunge the extras & see if that makes 
any difference.
