In addition to your comments, the original author should also check
that libusb is at least at version 0.1.6 and was found by configure.
I.e. configure shows "LIBS = -lusb ..." to the end of its output.

Patches are welcome :-) I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle but I
guess interrupt URBs could be used by defining a new ioctl.
