The "UNKNOWN vendor and product" most probably means that you use a
very old kernel. Either 2.2 or one of the early 2.4 series. It may
still work with the snapscan backend (I don't know), but will cause
trouble with other backends.

If your kernel is not that old, it may be a communication problem with
the scanner. Replug the power and USB cable and try again. Run
sane-find-scanner before you  run scanimage so you can make sure you
don't use the wrong firmware.

> scanimage -L

Try

SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=255 scanimage -L 2>log

and send us the log file.
