Thank you for the response and the offer. Unfortunately, I am running 
RHL8.0. Mr. Gates taught me to beware of backward compatibility issues, 
so I'm a little leary of installing those rpms. In the meantime, I took 
Henning's suggestion and installed the tar file on top of the old files. 
The scanner works much better now, but still seems to have too much red. 
The preview function works, the lamp turns off as it's supposed to, and 
the image quality is much better than it was. I'll play with it a little 
more.

Also, I think Henning advised me to install a new version of the Plustek 
driver; only I no longer have a copy of it and haven't had time to 
search for it. I'll do that now, and then reinstall the 
sane-backends-1.0.11 with the new driver from the tar files.
