That's the known bug that happens with some gt68xx scanners and some
UHCI chipsets, see the gt68xx homepage.

You still use the version of gt68xx that comes with
sane-backendds-1.0.12. Get a snapshot from
http://www.sane-project.org/snapshots/ . That one should work.

Before trying again, unplug and replug your scanner. It may even be
necessary to unload/reload the usb-uhci and scanner modules.
