This is not a problem. Within the backends themself SANE_I18N is a 
no-op, it is only used to mark translatable strings. It does not affect 
anything in the compilation. It is enough to mark each string as 
translatable once.

The display and parsing of translated strings is entirely in the hands 
of the frontends. When communicating with the backends the frontends 
should use the untranslated values provided by the backends.

However, I do support the idea of having a more standardized set of 
values across backends. It would make life easier for people writing 
frontends.
