I had a similar problem (black scans with HP Scanjet 7400C; OS: Mandrake
Linux 9.2). I had also reported this to the list.
I tried patching the source and recompiling as suggested below. The
compile succeeded. Sane detected the scanner (which is now a
scsi-generic scanner instead of the earlier usb scanner).
However xsane hangs on clicking the button "Acquire preview".
What have I got wrong?
Will appreciate help on this.

It looks like you run a very old version of SANE/Avision. Just update
to:
http://svn.rocklinux-consulting.de/sane-avision/trunk/backend/
http://www.rocklinux-consulting.de/oss/avision/
It should just work then. (incl. ADF and 16 bit scans)
