CUPS does only 2 things:
 - interpret its input (a postscript of PDF file) by feeding it
through GhostScript accompanied by the PPD (PostScript Printer
Definition) matchin the printer
 - send the output to the printer through a backend implementing the
low-level access layer

SANE works basically the same way.
