Try first to upgrade your sane packages:
sane-backends (present version 1.0.15), sane-frontends (present version
1.0.13) 

Also with dpi values check if you have enough memory.

A4 format at 300 dpi = 25 Mbyte, at 600 dpi = 100 Mbyte.
