The epson stylus CX1500 is supported by the snapscan backend, but only 
in the current development version. The version of SANE in debian 
sarge will not work with the CX1500.

To use the development version you need to compile SANE from source. 
You can get a CVS snapshot of the latest sources from 
http://www.sane-project.org/snapshots. Make sure to uninstall the 
SANE version from Debian before installing your self compiled 
version.

You don't need to change any configuration settings for this scanner. 
You don't need a firmware file, either.
