Thanks!  That did the trick.  The scanner is not as quiet as with
Windows XP, but it scans the whole area and the scan head
returns to its rest position.

xsane seems to have some alignment issues.  The marked area on
the preview scan does not match the final image.  The final image
seems shifted in the vertical axis.  I will be happy to send you
screen shots of the preview selected area and the resulting scan
if you need them.  Kooka seems to be able to handle it correctly
though.
