Woohoo, it works!  Thank you very much for your expert analysis!

So it was some kind of problem with the USB interrupt handling
on the linkstation...  which makes me a bit nervous since a lot
of device protocols rely on proper interrupt handling.  I shall
check with the linkstation community whether they have some idea
to fix that and then the SANE pixma driver should work unmodified.

I'll keep you posted.
