You can grab sane-backends 1.0.19~cvs20070505-1 from
http://incoming.debian.org (or, in a few hours, from a debian mirror
near you) and rebuild the package for Etch:

 - grab the .orig.tar.gz, diff.gz and .dsc
 - apt-get build-dep libsane
 - dpkg-source -x sane-backends_1.0.19~cvs20070505-1.dsc
 - cd sane-backends-1.0.19~cvs20070505
 - dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
