Nothing changed - I tried both scanners on the same machine.
I have done a few test scans now - hope that helps. Here are the resulting

I used:

scanadf --mode Color -v --resolution 100 --y-resolution 100 --pagewidth 210
--pageheight 400

with and without width/heigth:

$ identify */*

fi-4120c/height.200 PNM 826x787 DirectClass 1.9mb
fi-4120c/height.400[1] PNM 826x1100 DirectClass 2.6mb
fi-4120c/no.height[2] PNM 826x1100 DirectClass 2.6mb
fi-4120c/no.size[3] PNM 850x1100 DirectClass 2.7mb
fi-4120c/xsane.height.2970[4] JPEG 846x1169 DirectClass 94kb

s510/height.200[5] PNM 826x787 DirectClass 1.9mb
s510/height.400[6] PNM 826x1100 DirectClass 2.6mb
s510/no.height[7] PNM 826x1100 DirectClass 2.6mb
s510/no.size[8] PNM 850x1100 DirectClass 2.7mb
s510/xsane.height.279.4[9] JPEG 850x1100 DirectClass 83kb

The only valid length scan is produced with xsane and the old fi-4120c.
Xsane does seem to detect different page length right from the start: 29,7
vs. 27,94. I never set them in xsane explicitly.

Additionally when I use scanimage with length 400 the s510 doesn't stop
blinking when the page is alread ejected - which means the sanner is still
trying to scan.
