Hi,

I don't think there's particularly a right version to use, the backend  
hasn't been touched in years.  Although, the parport_pc has been  
slightly broken for quite a while:

That might explain what you're seeing?  Is the I/O port displayed the  
same when you don't have ppdev loaded?  If not, er.. try messing with  
the bios settings so the port matches what parport_pc assumes?  Sorry  
it's not a great solution.. and sorry for the slow reply.
