That's right, epkowa will not work on OS X because this scanner unfortunately 
requires a closed source plugin and we do not ship binaries for OS X.

Did you try installing the OS X driver for this scanner provided by Epson? 
Perhaps from the CD that came with the hardware or from Epson's website?
Or do you require SANE support for your purposes?

Some of these plugin scanners do work with other backends: snapscan, plustek and 
as Allan mentions, epjitsu. But I really don't know anything about these 
backends, sorry.

What I can tell you is that this scanner will certainly not work with the epson 
or epson2 backends because they do not support the plugin scanners.
