[sane-devel] Best supported, affordable scanner?

I realize this is an abstract question...

Given the following criteria;

* Relatively low cost
* Currently available in retail stores
* Simple flatbed is acceptable
* Use case is basic scanning/archival/OCR

I have reviewed the hardware compatibility docs/web pages etc.  No
brand preference in particular.

Like to hear a few hints what might be the best picks, if possible
