Ubuntu 12.04 ships libsane-extras_1.0.22.  This should install without a
hitch but no longer includes support for your scanner.  I guess that's
why you're trying the older version.  You could forcibly install that
but I doubt it'll work.

You can get a working frontend, backend and the required non-free plugin
for this scanner from:
