Hi Brian,

The MF4890DW is listed here:
http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html#S-PIXMA .

As you can see, the MF4800 Series has the status complete in the
development version of Sane.

Because you're using Ubuntu, you can use my ppa to get the resent
version of Sane's development version:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git

After this update your system.
